“You are good indeed,” said Beauty. “I assure you that I am pleased with your heart, and when I think of it, you do not seem so ugly to me.”
“Oh, as for that, yes,” replied the beast. “I have a good heart, but I am still a monster.”
“There are men who are greater monsters than you,” said Beauty, “and I prefer you and your appearance to those who under the appearance of men hide hearts that are false, corrupt, and ungrateful.”
This is from Madame Leprince de Beaumont’s Beauty and the Beast, which I’ve been reading along with many other French tales for my Literature class. Despite it’s immediate connotation, I bookmarked this exceprt for it virtue, and not out of some petty female bitterness. I honestly do believe that the goodness of a person’s heart can blur out even the most marred physicalities. Then again, a wise person once said: beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?
