UCSD Fallfest 2008 feat. Lupe Fiasco

This past Friday was UCSD’s annual Fallfest, which is a musical event, often featuring well known alternative, hip hop, and rap artists.  It’s not as glamorously played out as Sungod per se, but I personally find the music of Fallfest to be more tasteful.  This year’s line up featured Ben Kweller, We are Lions, and Grammy-winning rapper LUPE FIASCO.  Honestly, I had only heard two of Fiasco’s songs before: “Superstar”, and “Hip Hop Saved My Life”, and sure enough, they were performed during the concert.  I’ve been to both Fallfest concerts in the last 2 years, and I must say that this past one was undoubtedly the best.  Fiasco’s performance was soulful, deep, evocative, and artistic–I was in love.  This is also a lot coming from someone who musically still lives in the 80s.  I’d always been turned off by rap music, because I could never manage to relate to the lyrics.  Maybe it’s just ignorance, but I’ve always found rap lyrics to be angry and violent most of the time. Anyhow, Lupe Fiasco’s performance proved me wrong.

Here’s my recording of Fiasco’s performance of Hip Hop Saved My Life.  I couldn’t get a closer seat because we were so far behind in what was probably a mile-long line–I kid you not!

  2. Hmm, I do remember that there was drama in high school…but I don’t really remember being a part of many of them. Guess I wasn’t special? haha
